It goes without saying that bad habits can block success. The challenge is finding ways to overcome your own self-destructive behavior. If you’ve ever tried to break a bad habit, you know it’s not easy, and yet, many people will tell you that ALL IT TAKES is willpower.

I have personally studied the habits of highly successful people for years, and identified 5 valuable techniques that can be applied if you want to perform at your maximum potential in everything that you do. And NO, you won’t survive on willpower alone!

Are you ready to develop new habits that will help you advance your personal life, business or career? New habits are more easily formed by applying a few simple, yet effective techniques that will help you get started.

Here are 5 highly effective habits of remarkably successful people that can help you on your way to your own success:

#1: Set Clear, Specific, and Measurable Goals.

If you set goals that you don’t truly believe in, you most likely won’t achieve them. Make sure the goals you set are truly important to you. Focus on only a few at a time. While it’s great to have a list of goals, you can have more success if you concentrate your energy toward two or three at a time. Describe your goals with specific details, so you can get clear in your mind on your destination. Vague goals mean vague results.

#2: Be Consistent.

No one should have to remind you to go to bed at night or brush your teeth, right? That’s because you have adopted those habits throughout your life. What other habits can you adopt that will happen automatically? Maybe it’s waking up early, so you get things done before you start your job. Or maybe you take an hour every morning and write down your goals. Come up with habits that support your goals and program them to happen automatically so you can make daily, consistent progress. Persistence supersedes talent, genetics and luck. There can be no true success without it.

#3: Stay disciplined regardless of how you feel today.

This is how true habits are formed. Imagine if you only worked out on days when you woke up feeling rested, energetic and in a happy state of mind. If your workout depended upon you being in a joyful state, they aren’t likely to happen regularly. Decide the actions you are going to take and follow through despite your mood. When you exercise when you don’t feel like it, you are working out your discipline muscle too. You will be proud of keeping your commitments. This same mentality works for any goal. Remember, it won’t actually be easier tomorrow unless you do it today.

#4: Are you tracking your progress?

When you set your goals, do you have benchmarks to assess how you are doing? It’s easy to be excited about a new goal in the beginning, but your results depend on the actions you take each day. At the start of a new month, see how you are doing. What is working? What isn’t? Determine how to do more of what’s working to expedite your progress. When you regularly track your progress, there’s an added bonus, you stay connected to your goals. The reason why people give up so fast is because they tend to look at how far they still have to go, instead of recognizing the progress they have already made.

#5: Be resourceful to support your habits.

Has someone else successfully achieved what you want to achieve? Research the success habits of others and model those habits and incorporate them into your own life. Blogs, Video’s and Books are widely available; all you have to do is tap into it and apply what you learn to your life. If you are wondering where to start, here is my list of favorite books that has helped me develop powerful habits overtime:

  1. Psycho Cybernetics – By Maxwell Maltz & Matt Furey
  2. Think and Grow Rich – By Napoleon Hill
  3. The Slight Edge – By Jeff Olson
  4. The Millionaire Success Habits – By Dean Graziosi
  5. The One Thing – By Gary W. Keller & Jay Papasan
  6. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – By Stephen Covey

Becoming successful is without a doubt one of the most coveted achievements today. As you can clearly see, it requires a fair share of effort that slowly develops overtime. However, If you stick to the 5 techniques outlined in this post, you’ll be able to develop powerful, and deeply rooted habits, and make them part of your new success personality.
